Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) is a fire safety process of identifying zones (3D spaces) where a flammable atmosphere might exist. The Hazardous Area zones are shown on drawings and then ignition sources, especially electrical equipment, within those zones can be protected from being ignition sources.

Risk Assessment is the process of identifying hazards to an operation, assigning a Likelihood and Consequence to hazardous events and then determining a Risk score.
Risk Assessment is required by several pieces of NZ legislation: -

  • Health & Safety at Work Act (HSW Act)
  • HSW (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations
  • HSW (Hazardous Substances) Regulations
  • HSW (Pressure Equipment, Cranes & Passenger Ropeways) Regulations
